IRONTON, Ohio (WSAZ) -- Due to the forecast of between minus one (-1) and minus five (-5) degree below zero temperatures overnight, the Ohio Department of Transportation has decided to close the Ironton-Russell Bridge at 11 p.m. Monday.
ODOT says the bridge will remain closed until temperatures rise and the bridge has been inspected.
Although the bridge which links Ironton, Ohio to Russell, Kentucky is safe for travel, the bridge’s steel truss structure is not wholly guarded against temperatures sustained below zero should it incur damage from any severe or unusual external force, according to a press release.
Once the temperature is sustained above five (+5) degrees Fahrenheit, ODOT inspectors will conduct a field inspection to determine if any changes have been critical to the bridge’s load-carrying capacity.
While the bridge is closed, drivers will be detoured via U.S. Route 52 and the Ashland, Kentucky, bridge at Coal Grove.
